Passed CCNA today

Hey guys,

I passed my CCNA 640 - 801 on my first attempt today

Got a score of 923 broken down as follows:

Planning & Design 100%
Implementation & Operation 91%
Troubleshooting 77%
Technology 92%

Its been a long hard 4 months trying to balance CCNA work with employment but its been worth it as I've now got an internal promotion within an ISP.

So was it everything you expected? How did you do on time?

I think thats the thing that is worrying me the most about the exam. I'm not to worried about the concepts, configs, and facts. I'm worried about how long it is going to take to answer those complex questions with diagrams and exibits.

I finished with 15 minutes to spare so time wasn't an issue. To be honest, It was alot easier than I expected. If you can do the 'Cisco CCNA exam certification guide (odom) questions on the cd then you'll be absolutely fine.

One tip though, make sure you can subnet in your head (ie quickly!). If you need to write down binary numbers when subnetting then time WILL be an issue.

Oh yes most definitly!

One of my new responsibilities will be to configure routers for customers (especially for use in an MPLS environment). Should be fun!

I am seriously sucking at subnetting in my head. I can do it if I binary it all out on paper. but even then it gives me a headache.
Any tips? Mnemonic devices?
One of my books had a table you write out. I skimmed over it because I didnt get what it was for. Now I ma half way there and cant find it!
Were the router config simulations a pain?

What about subnetting is giving you trouble? I believe the table you're thinking of is from the Todd Lammle Sybex book.

The best way to remember subnetting is to just memorize the CIDR values, unfortunately. Rather than trying to find a method to the madness I just committed everything to memory. My advice is to do this to the best of your ability, then during the "how to take this test" portion of the Cisco exam, write down your CIDR values on the provided scratch paper. I've heard of people going so far as to write out every power of four for those pesky /30 masks.

If you don't feel comfortable subnetting in general then don't even bother take the exam yet. Alot of questions are directly or indirectly related to subnetting in some way (which makes sense considering its how routing works) and so you need to be fast at it.

Don't bother with memorising charts as they won't really teach you the mechanics of it.

Here's how I would learn subnetting:

learn it in Binary first and master that
Once you know the mechanics of how it works, you can learn to subnet in your head which is pretty easy.

Say for example we have to work out which subnet 10.3.4.5/27 falls into.

First you need to know that a /27 is a .224

then, work out the block size which is 256 - 224 = 32

Now we know how much the subnets increment by in the last octet ie

10.3.4.0
10.3.4.32
10.3.4.64 etc

so we now know that 10.3.4.5/27 falls into the subnet 10.3.4.0

You should be able to do the above steps in your head in a few seconds (with practise of course !)
