FTMFW!!!
Today I passed the 640-801 CCNA exam with a perfect score! 1000/1000
I felt really good about the exam, each question kept comming to me and everything just made sense. I was so focused on each question. Trusted my instincs and reacted.
My path was a bit different. I started studying a year ago and we have a CCIE lab here at work to play with.
The books I read were:
Sybex CCNA Todd Lammle (re-read over the weekend)
Cisco Press Intro-ICND Odem (hard read, advise you read this after the Sybex)
I also had a 2514, 2520 router and 2924 switch for home use. Since all the equipment I need is available at work. Im going to be selling my whole home lab with everything you need to pass CCNA. Just send me a PM.
Thank you everyone for your assitance and support.
Good luck and God Speed!
See you on the CCNP forum.

I'm thinking I'm going to pick up the Sybex book when I need to renew my CCNA...there are so many good reviews of the book, and it seems to be working.
Good luck with CCNP!MCSE 2003, MCSA 2003, LPIC-1, MCP, MCTS: Vista Config, MCTS: SQL Server 2005, CCNA, A+, Network+, Server+, Security+, Linux+, BSCS (Information Systems) -

So between Cisco press and sybex, which do you think offered the most beneficial preparation? There is no place like 127.0.0.1 BUT 209.62.5.3 is my 127.0.0.1 away from 127.0.0.1! -

To answer your question really, both SYBEX CCNA and Cisco Press ICND absolutely. Sybex to get it fundamentally and Cisco Press for further detail to hammer it home. Use the CD's with the books, do the questions. Discipline! Then make it a hobby to play with Cisco gear. You must work with real Cisco gear to truly understand the concept of ports, configuration registry, layer 2 and 3 connection fundamentals, interfaces, memory/flash, etc. Just playing with it at home did more than reading books. I made it a hobby!
This had been a quest of mine since the 2000 dot.com bubble popped, right after I graduated from Marshall. But I never had the confidence to take it. My career took me a few different paths, but I came back full circle to where I wanted to be in Networking a year ago with FedEx; excellent company... all Cisco!
Maybe it was overkill for this exam, I think I just got a lucky question set. I've worked long and hard with a lot of patience to get to where I wanted to be!
If you are a new or stuck at a help desk position and desire the networking field, do not give up! I did it and so can you! You got to have patience and determination! (starting to sound like Todd Lammle with all the exclamation points...lol)

Noe84 Member Posts: 60 ■■□□□□□□□□The Sybex CCNA Study Guide 5th Edition by Todd Lammle is a good book. I have this and the Cisco Press from 2003. Both are good but the Sybex is better and focuses more on the objective to pass.
First time I saw a perfect score. To bad they don't print it on your certification so for bragging rights at work. :POn to MCSA 2003. -

What you did is exactly what I am doing which makes me feel good about the test. Already read sybex and cisco press ICND about 1.5 times each. Now i am hammering the gear and going through all the practice tests. That Cisco press ICND CD that comes with the book is rather difficult. So I i guess I should use that as a CCNA comparison. I find myself overstepping the CCNA material a lot though just because I am curious. So it looks as if the 2 routers and 1 switch totally sufficed for you. There is no place like 127.0.0.1 BUT 209.62.5.3 is my 127.0.0.1 away from 127.0.0.1! -

Netstudent...i thought i was the only one thinking that. the ICND test cd from Cisco press is really hard. But i think that's a good thing. it really makes you think. I don't worry about the time. I really just take my time and read the questions over and over and try to figure out the answer. -
Netstudent Member Posts: 1,693 ■■■□□□□□□□ya me too...I think the STP questions on that CD are the hardest for me. I'v read and read the STP chapters and I feel like I understand it. But like I have said before, when it comes to looking at compex diagrams, I just can't get it right. It seems like everything I thought I knew about STP goes right out the window. It's finding the root ports, designated ports, and blocking ports that are kicking my ass. And I can't ask for help about it because when I post a question, it just gets nuked because of copyright issues. Its like dang how am I supposed to get it if I can't get help. What would be awesome, is a book with nothing but LOTS of STP diagrams with detailed explanantions for each one. Which ports are fwding/blocking and why. Someone posted a nice little STP puzzle, and I had a lot of questions about it but it got wiped out before I could ask. There is no place like 127.0.0.1 BUT 209.62.5.3 is my 127.0.0.1 away from 127.0.0.1!

calaverasgrandes Member Posts: 67 ■■□□□□□□□□Congratulations! I am sure your MCSE and network+ helped a little bit!
I have an older Cisco book. The book and the disc contradict each other, and it refers to chapters on the disc that arent there! I searched around for other books on amazon and ended up getting the '31 days until your exam" and "CCNA command quick reference". Between these two I was able to get a better grip on IOS and some routing protocol stuff.
But I found I was really missing it on subnets, specifically VLSM and bit borrowing. In 3 different books and several websites I kept hitting this brick wall.
They would talk about standard subnets and talk about the existence of VLSM. Then all of them would skip forward to computing subnets and bit borrowing.
Well I finally figured it out with a book I got in a bargain bin for $5.
TCP/IP Addressing 2nd edition Buck Graham. Yeah a whole book about it! Nowhere else did anybody bother to tell me that the borrowed bits are the high order contiguous bit of the next octet. So one bit is 128, 2 is 192, 3 is 224, 4 is 240 and so on.
After I finished the 2 chapters on subnetting I suddenly started to be able to do all that math in my head without gimicks or tables.
I also have 3 2500 series routers that I am banging arounf everyday.
Took me a few days to password recover all of them, well one was still "cisco"!
Another week to figure out how to get teh interfaces up. Now I am working on protocols like RIP OSPF etc. Later this week, I am going to hook up the switch I go on ebay, as soon as I can locate an AUI tranceiver!studying on 70-290, 70-291 and CCNA. -
