MCSE NT4 need to know best route to upgrade?!

Hi,

I am an NT4 MCSE and I have to upgrade to 2k or 2k3 at least to MCSA and don't
know where to start.

The 2000 exam are retiring in March '08, so I would go for the 2003 track. To get to the MCSA 2003, you need a client exam, two core exams and an elective.

For the client, you can use 210 (Windows 2000 Pro), 270 (XP Pro), or 620 (Vista).

The core exams are 290 and 291.

I believe you NT 4.0 MCSE will count as the elective, but you will want to confirm that.

There is no upgrade path available for MCSE NT 4. The 70-240 exam 'was' the exam to upgrade to MCSE 2000, but that exam is retired.

So you'll have to start over and pass all the exams. Except one, because the MCSE NT 4 by itself is a valid elective for MCSA/MCSE 2000&2003.

You could go for the MCSA 2000, and than upgrade to 2003 before March 2008.

I suggest going for the MCSA 2003 and than upgrade to MCTS for Vista and/or Windows 2008 instead, or go straight for Vista/2008/. Unless your employer wants you to get the 2000/2003 certs of course.

test-wise what are the options I have?

I could take then 70-270 client 1x
70-290 & 70-291 core 2x

NT4 counts as an elective hoppefully. elective 1x

You are correct, it is an elective.

You can verify your MCSE options at Microsoft's website:

http://www.microsoft.com/learning/mcp/mcse/windows2003/nt.mspx

This will give you the exams that you can take to earn the mcse on 2003.

Actually there is an upgrade path from NT 4 MCSE, depending your electives.

In my case I took TCP/IP and IIS 4.0 which count as electives towards MCSE 2000. So all I needed to do was 210,215,216,217 and a design exam.
