Simple IP address question

Out of curiousity, since classful IP addressing isn't really used anymore and IP classes are wasteful...they were used to specify the Network and Host portion, correct? So did they not use subnet masks back in those days?

a subnet mask is always needed to define the network and host portion of an address. Even if a network is classful.
There is no place like 127.0.0.1 BUT 209.62.5.3 is my 127.0.0.1 away from 127.0.0.1!
