getting updated IOS for self study?

I just purchased a 1710 off ebay and its running an earlier IOS version.
I know the "official answer" is that IOS updates are available via a smartnet agreement, but when your equipment is part of a home lab for self study, thats not an option.
Is there any way to get updates for self study use? (beyond the common answer of begging for pirated copies)

it is running a later version of 11. I'd like to get it to 12.x... .2 or .3 hopefully.
