Dumb Quesetion about Router Ethernet port

So I'm going to copy a 12.x IOS using the TFTP program Pumpkin, suggested in a thread here: http://www.techexams.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=24825. I'm all good until step 10, where I can't get a connection in HyperTerminal. I plugged in a straight-through cable from my PC's 10/100 RJ-45 port to my routers' E0 port, but no connection is established. Do I telnet in, and if so, how? I've already set an IP address of 192.168.1.75/24 on the router's E0 interface and my lone RJ45 port on my PC is in that same subnet statically (192.168.1.69/24).
Thanks for answering this dumb question.
EDIT: Ok, so now I'm trying to load c2500-is-l.122-15.T IOS, but it keeps failing/timing out. Any common problems that usually lead to this sort of error? I created a folder called TFTP on the desktop and made that my root folder in my PumpKIN TFTP program, so that's not a issue I don't think.

dtlokee Member Posts: 2,378 ■■■■□□□□□□First you need a crossover cable to connect your PC to the 2524 router you have (unless the PC is auto mdi-x). Using Hyperterminal you need to create a serial connection (com 1 or whatever you have) to the console port using a rollover cable (and the DB-9 to rj-45 cable) or the blue Cisco console cable with a db-9 on one end and an RJ-45 on the other. The terminal settings are 9600 baud (or bit rate) No parity, 8 data bits, 1 stop bit and no flow control. That should get you a console connection. The only easy day was yesterday!

Bill Kaster Member Posts: 94 ■■□□□□□□□□^ Bah, of course. I don't know why I thought I could only connect to the router via one option or the other; both console and Eth ports connected at the same time makes perfect sense. Thanks!Starting my CCNA journey!

Bill Kaster Member Posts: 94 ■■□□□□□□□□Well, now I can't ping my laptop from my router; my router's E0 port is up and up, configured at 192.168.1.75/24 and my PC is 192.168.1.69/24. I type "ping 192.168.1.69" from priv. mode, but with no success.Starting my CCNA journey!

Netstudent Member Posts: 1,693 ■■■□□□□□□□Make sure you have a crossover cable from the NIC to the ethernet interface of the router. Also make sure your firewall is allowing echo requests. I'd say your firewall is the culprit here. There is no place like 127.0.0.1 BUT 209.62.5.3 is my 127.0.0.1 away from 127.0.0.1!

Bill,
Congrats on getting your connectivity problems resolved.
I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that you'll have to run the partition command on the router to create a single 16meg partition from the two 8meg partitions that you currently have. Otherwise, 12.X wont be able to fit. I'd suggest making liberal use of the ? to figure out how to use the partition command. If I remember right, the second partition needs to be empty for it to work.

The router can ping the PC and the PC can ping the router? OK
I'm guessing that the router is timing out, while attempting the TFTP transfer, can you see the transfer start in the display window of TFTP server (the PC)?
If not, doublecheck the IP address of the PC/server and the filename. Also be sure that the root directory is set correctly in the TFTP program.
If none of these suggestions lead you to a solution, then please post more details of the problem that you're having and where the timeout is occurring.

Does it time out before or after it reloads to do the copy? If it is before I would troubleshoot the configuration of the router and PC to make sure it's correct, also ensure you're typing the complet filename exactally as it appers. If it reloads then times out it might be due to not saving the config (the IP address and whatnot) or the config register is set to ignore NVRAM (0x2142 instead of 0x2102)The only easy day was yesterday! -
Bill Kaster Member Posts: 94 ■■□□□□□□□□^ I haven't need to do a reload, which I guess is a bad thing? I just erased the startup config by typing erase start. Now I get all this information:

Bill,
Is the TFTP server seeing your attempts to pull the IOS image? Or is the router just timing out and never hitting the TFTP server with the request? Knowing this will help narrow down the problem .
Do you get to the point where the router asks if you'd like to erase the flash memory? Let me know.

If you're copying and pasting the file name.... do you have "hide extension" enabled (i.e., you might be missing a .bin at the end of the file name).
You should be getting some information in the transfer window of pumpkin -- is it giving you a failed message there? Are you even connecting? Are you able to ping? (as georgemc has asked). Did you tell it to transfer files.... or is there a prompt somewhere waiting for you to okay the transfer? Is the "Server Running" check box checked?
If you can't ping, are you sure the transceiver is set properly (and working)? Are the lights flashing (if it has lights)?
If your flash is empty (and you're in the Bios mini emergency recovery IOS) you should also check the partition command in your config and do the no version of it so you have one partition of the full 16 megs.... unless you plan to try booting between different versions of the plain IP IOS as a lab.:mike: Cisco Certifications -- Collect the Entire Set! -
Bill Kaster Member Posts: 94 ■■□□□□□□□□I am able to ping 192.168.1.69 successfully, yes. My firewall is off to allow ICMP echos for that. I am get four sounds coming from Pumpkin and there is text indicating that it has failed to load the IOS file. Here's the Pumpkin text:

The Server Running boxed is also checked (I tried loading IOS without it checked and it wouldn't connect, predictably, but it's now checked). My router lights are flashing.
And as far as "hide extension" being enabled, I don't know what that is, but I tried renaming the file with .bin attached to the end of it and got the same text result above.Starting my CCNA journey! -

You can change this by opening "My Computer" > Choose tools > Folder Options > Select the View Tab > Scroll down to the option "Hide file extensions of known file types" and remove the check mark.
All of your files will then display their extension like .doc, .exe, .bin etc -

If you're on a windows PC there is a folder option to "hide extensions of known file types" (tools --> folders --> View Tab --> Advanced settings window --> Hide file extensions for know file types checkbox
The File not found means you're not typing in the correct name, or your file isn't in the folder you're telling PumpKIN to use to serve files.
Ah... just saw the "page 2" posts.... You don't get this kind of troubleshooting experience using a Simulator.
Can't ping? Sounds like a network problem. I had a cable I used for almost a year that had a bad crimp -- I'd just occasionally just have to push the cable back in after the cats played with it.:mike: Cisco Certifications -- Collect the Entire Set! -
Bill Kaster Member Posts: 94 ■■□□□□□□□□^ OK, now I've enabled hidden extensions, so now the file name is c2500-i-l.121-2.T.bin by default. I type that in, and it's clearly connecting with Pumpkin now (which is different from before. Why, I don't know). I get the following message:
'c2500-i-l.121-2.T.bin' of type 'octet' is requested from 192.168.1.75
Transmission of 'c2500-i-l.121-2.T.bin' is timed out
Transfer of 'c2500-i-l.121-2.T.bin' is aborted
The ACK tab of Pumpkin reads 0, but a file name does show up.
Here's the process I go through in trying to update my IOS:R2(boot)#copy tftp flash
