Crossover Cables

I understand that crossover cables cross the sending and receiving wires and that they are primarily used between hubs and switches, but if two machines are connected to a hub, how are their sending and receiving wires crossed? Does the hub cross them?

    I believe that straight cables are used to connect to hubs. I may be wrong though.

    No, you are correct. Straight cables are used to connect a host to a hub.

    It seems like it all depends on which ports you plug the cables into.

    If I have a hub, and two PCs on that hub want to communicate with each other, then they both should connect to the hub with straight through cables into MDI-X ports, which cross the send/receive wires. Right?

    As a rule, normal patch leads are used to connect PC to a hub or switch. When connecting two switches together you can also use regular patch cables if they have an uplink port, otherwise a crossover cable is used.
