First off I would like to thank everyone for such a great site. I'm taking the Network+ test Saturday morning (1/10/04) and I'm rather nervous.

Here's my question. I've been trying to get as familar with the TCP/IP utilities as I can. And netstat kinda confuses me.

When I have one connection to a IMAP server, two web pages open, one secure page open, and one telnet session.

Active Connections

Proto Local Address Foreign Address State
TCP 150.48.150.200:1120 146.132.8.76:406 ESTABLISHED
TCP 150.48.150.200:1121 146.132.8.71:143 ESTABLISHED
TCP 150.48.150.200:1123 146.132.8.71:143 ESTABLISHED
TCP 150.48.150.200:2184 146.132.185.53:23 ESTABLISHED
TCP 150.48.150.200:2212 146.132.140.88:443 ESTABLISHED

I can see that the port 143 for IMAP, and 443 for SSL and 23 for Telnet, but why is 406 coming up for HTTP? Also, are the well known ports that I have to know for the test, are they all referring to the Foreign address? In the books they made it sound like all those ports where the the local host's port numbers. Thanks again for all the help!

Port 406 refers to Interactive mail support. Maybe this is opened when you are using IMAP. Good question though. Hopefully somebody can clear this up for you. Good luck
