SOFTWARE SUPPORT VS DESKTOP SUPPORT

I have a change to go from desktop support to software support. Just want some insight on the plus/minus of both. The desktop postion is in a major university's school of medicine. The software support postion is with a software developememt firm that has software that supports the insurance industry

I wouldn't want to get pigeon holed into supporting one custom application, unless that application had a very wide user base. Something like SQL, Oracle, Exchange, Citrix, etc.
Not sure how much interest insurance industry specfic software support would have for me personally. I think I'd get bored fast or worry about losing my more mainstream skills.
