Ethereal is free still (I think) and not bad for what you want.

CommView is pretty nice. I prefer it's interface to Ethereal.

I remember it's just a little tricky to get started at first if you're a little bit new to it.
However, It's free and fast and worth a look see..
But It's more an IDS than a throughput benchmark tool. So it depends what your needs are.

WireShark is the standard for free protocol analyzers (but good 'ole NetXRay still has my heart).
