I am preparing for the ICND test, and I was wondering if the configuration presented in the Self-study guide applies when using a router on a stick to route between vlans? I tried using the native vlan as part of the configuration and it worked as long as I specified using encapsulation dot1q native on the router. Also I have another question. If using this configuration which involves not setting encapsulation dot1q on the router to the native vlan and configuring it on the physical interface is used, what default gateway do I use for the host configuration? Do I use the physical address or do I use the address provided by the subinterfaces?

Your help would be greatly appreciated.

You use the addresses of the sub int for the gateway of each vlan. Most people shut down the interface that has the native vlan, like pruning the native off a trunk for security reasons.

I don't know what configuration from what study guide you are talking about so can't help you on that one.

general rule of thumb:

Anytime you have subinterfaces , the physical interface is treated as a seperate entity and doesn't have an IP

Keep in mind traffic in he native VLAN will not have a tag so you can use the physical interface for the native vlan or you can use a subinterface with the "encapsulation dot1q 99 native" command (assuming VLAN 99 is the native VLAN) to accomplish your goal.
