I believe the term is Jumbo framing. By adjusting the size of a MTU (ie. increasing it), you decrease the amount of fragmentation that occurs from router hop to router hop in a heterogenous networks.

DrTCP at dslreport.com
allows you to adjust the TCP/IP stack settings of Windows clients, including the maximum MTU size. However, these are static settings and not dynamically adjustable (rebooting may be required). DrTCP is
not
compatible with Windows Vista.
