Thinking about changing careers

I am fairly new (experience wise) to the IT field. I am A+ Certified and am currently working on my Associates Degree in Information Systems. I live in North Carolina and am alarmed at the lack of IT jobs here. I have begun to question if this career path is the right one. If I had to consider other professions the only thing that comes to mind is Software Engineering. What are your thoughts on current state of the IT profession? Thank You

I have about a years worth of Industry experience. In that time, I have been doing mainly short term contracts which include migrations, help desk work as well as desktop support positions.
