What's your new year's resolution (IT)?

binarysoulbinarysoul Member Posts: 993
What is your next year's resolution on improving your IT skills, e.g., getting certifications, promotions, projects, etc? I plan to take my CCNA and MCSA, but I could do something else instead of MCSA.

If you have a non-IT resolution, share it so we can see how ambitious you're :)

I'm planning on finishing up the MCSE path this spring, get started on the MCITP: Enterprise Administrator after the Windows Server 2008 launch, then go back to the Cisco path and go for CCNP. After that, I'm probably thinking it's time to go back to school and hit the books. That, however, is probably more of a 2009 resolution.

Wrap up my MCSE+S and obtain my CCNA.

After that, it's between going after 2008 and starting my CCNP.

Just keep on studying each day until I pass the CCIE lab exam in 2008. It will be nice to spend more time with the family again.

Mine for this year was to get move invloved in IT since I was getting out. I have finished a few things and hope to move to CCNP when the course starts in febuarary. It takes 6 months to finish, but the instructor told me its much easier for someone with work experience and takes both of them back to back. So hopefully I will be good. Last part of 08 I don't know. Maybe look into MCSA/MCSE or Sun Solaris or Linux+. Who knows. The main objective is to keep learning for 08.

I would like to complete CCNP by summer of next year. Maybe that and CCDA by this time next year.

Realistically my new years goal is to just "keep at it". It is very easy to slack off.

I also like to run a marathon. I missed my chance this year icon_sad.gif

What kind of marathon was it? I don't know a lot about marathon, but few co-workers used to say some run for 1 km, 10 km and so on. Was yours 10km. I suppose if you can run 10km, you would be like a CCIE in IT :)

heh no a 10k is just a 10k run (I did 3 of those this year).

    A full-marathon is 42km.

Its a term us military folk use. I meant as in get out the military. I mainly worked with electronics, but one of the systems I supported when to win 2000 server and Sun systems. So that got me involved in IT for the past 4 years. I prefer the IT work more than chaseing trons and the pay seems to be better on the outside(which is always a bonus icon_twisted.gif )

To finish the MCSA:Security in the first few months of the year would be nice.

A new job wouldn't go amiss either, or at least being able to get some of my clients to understand that sometimes things do break, and if it was that business critical they really should have took my advice on basic business continuity and DR in the first place and spent a bit more cash. I'll spare you the details, suffice to say I've spent a large portion of this weekend fixing 'something that broke' and have generally had my ears chewed off in the process. On the plus side, it got me out of Christmas shopping with the missus icon_lol.gif

MCSA before march 2008. Got 290 booked on the 18th of december 2007...hopefully this time around I will be ready to rumble after my time starved last attempt.

Maybe full MCSE 2003 by the end of 2008......depends on the exam requirements of MCSE 2008 I guess.....I have to say im actually starting to really like MS and supporting users on windows based platforms.

CCNP - holy cow my time will get chomped. I was never realistic about starting this puppy in 2007. Ok...heres my plan, by June 2008 i need to re-read/review all resources I have from CCNA. Lab exposure probably not needed because I still get to tinkle about at work when I want with various routers and switches. In june I will finialise a lab setup for home practice, which hopeully by then I will have the budget for. July-December - BSCI - Lab it up, read it up and become a Cisco ninja for a few months and take exam before year is out 2008. I think completion for CCNP would be late 2009 for me if realistic and Im fine with that.

Cool topic, nice to read others expectations of themselves. Let's all wish each other good study and much success for 2008 :)

    Cheers,

First off, get my CCNA (third times a charm right?)

Second, begin studying for the CCNP. I think there are a couple of tests to take on this path so I'd like to get one done at least, maybe two.

Third, quit being the BOFH at work, and start being nicer even to those users who are annoying.

Fourth, redocument our network. This covers diagramming, an improved list of addresses, etc etc. It will most likely involve a couple of lengthy scans (connect scans) using NMAPFE on our network, to ensure my IP management is accurate. This covers all of the public IP's issued in the past before my time to our customers.

Fifth, start working on a plan to switch our network to 100% dynamic routed, vs 100% bridged w/RSTP.

How come nobody's planning on getting security certifications? I too am thinking about CCNA, MCSE, but not security. Could we all be wrong ? icon_lol.gif Maybe all good jobs/$$$$ is in security.

I'm sure somebody is, I know I'm planning on doing (more) security certs in the future. I'm just not doing it this coming year, since school is coming up the year after. Security is something you need to be in for the long haul, along with (and after) the "regular" networking and admin certs.

    3) VMware Certs
    4) MCSE or CCNA

    we'll see how everything goes!

at this point I'm just not intrested. Maybe one day. If the only job that I can land is in security then maybe. I'm sticking with my intrest makes learning easier.

I definitley read up and try to stay up on security, but to me security is something you should do after you master the admin/engineer part of your profession.
