I was wondering if anyone here works as a Geek Squad In-Home Tech and can give me a little insight on the job? What's it like? Any pointers on that test you're supposed to take before getting hired? What's your typical day like? Do all the in-home techs get the Bug and a cellphone? Does Geek Squad cover your gas?
A little on me: I was a PC tech at Fry's and currently working at a helpdesk while I'm in school. I only work part-time at the helpdesk though so I need some extra income to help pay the bills.

JDMurray Admin Posts: 13,092 AdminHave you tried the forum search feature looking for the keywords geek squad? There are several threads in this forum which reference employment in that organization.

Yeah but most of those are people talking about in-store techs. No one really talks about anything that would answer the questions I asked. -
supertechCETma Member Posts: 377I had the pleasure of working with Kofi Ramsey as an SME for the DHTI+ exam, as well as for the ETA-I RESI exam. He is in charge of Best Buy/Geek Squad on the National level.
I can tell you with complete confidence that the objectives for both of those exams is exactly what Geek Squad is looking for.

I decided not to even bother with the GeekSquad job. I did more research beyond this forum on them and came to the conclusion that the helpdesk job I'm at will ultimately teach me more and look better on my resume. Now I'm just looking for another part-time job to work with my part-time helpdesk job to help pay bills. -
crap I forgot my old pwd Member Posts: 250Yeah I used to do Geek Squad in home services. Have you ever been to the circus? Yeah, its kinda like that... It was the worst job that I ever had. If I can give a piece of advice, its don't take that job. Best Buy will make you scam soooooooo many people, and will also try to own your soul... The only thing I liked better about the job was that I only had to deal with on average 3 to 4 customers a day, instead of like 30 to 40 working in store. I can remember one time I went to this customer's house, who apparently was a drug trafficker, and me and the other cadet I brought almost got killed there when some rival competitors stopped by and almost shot everyone. Oh yeah, the other plus to this job was that the customers are usually nicer to you in their home than at the store, but like I have pointed out, not always. Have fun.

Anonymouse Member Posts: 509 ■■■■□□□□□□Yeah I didn't like the idea of scamming people. I really was looking forward to being able to drive the VW Bug and keep the mileage off of my own car. But, I really want to learn more in the IT field and I feel that I can do that at the helpdesk I am at rather than GeekSquad.

Anonymouse Member Posts: 509 ■■■■□□□□□□Well I'm bringing the post back from the dead because my current contract is almost over and I need to find a job fast and the Geek Squad are the only people to call me back about a full-time position.
Sorry if I'm repeating my own or anyone elses questions but for anyone that has worked In-Home or has taken the DATA test for employment: what should I study up on for this test? I totally bombed it a few months ago and never went in for a re-take but with my contract running out I'm getting desperate. Anyone? Anyone? -
Tyrant1919 Member Posts: 519 ■■■□□□□□□□My Roommate is a Double Agent here in Abilene, what kind of questions are you looking for?
I considered doing Geek Squad once I moved here to Abilene when I only had A+, Net+, Svr+, but discovered I have more potential elsewhere, even more then where I'm currently working at. I couldn't honestly charge anybody $100~ to backup 20GBs worth of stuff on.A+/N+/S+/L+/Svr+

Just wondering what to look out for on the DATA test you have to take for employment.
