MCTS - Vista Client Configuration

Hi guys,

I'm just trying to figure this all out. I was interested in looking into getting the MCSE/MCSA certificate. However, I understand there is a new generation of certificates. Are these certificate exams being offered as of now? If so I am looking into getting the MCTS - Vista Client Configuration as a starting point towards the MCITP - Entrerprise Support Technician certificate. I see no point in acheiving the MCSE/MCSA if I'm a new comer to the Microsoft certificates.

If they are offering the MCTS exams, where in Canada could I take this test???

The new exams are being offered as of now. Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP will still be used for many years to come, so even if you choose to obtain an MCSE now, it will not go to waste. There's nothing wrong with starting out with Vista and Server 2008 either. It's completely up to you.

Keep in mind, if you start with an MCSE, you will need one exam to upgrade to Server 2008 Administrator, and two more after that (which includes a Vista exam) to obtain the title of Server 2008 Enterprise Administrator. If you do not have an MCSE, you will need five exams total.

I checked prometric and couldn't find the MSTC exams...

Also I cannot find information related to Windows 2008 server.

You need to find the exam number of the exam you're looking for: http://www.microsoft.com/learning/mcp/mcts/default.mspx

For example, Configuring Vista is 70-620.

There may be a couple that haven't gone live yet, but the majority have. I used Ontario as a test and found them without problem.

You need to select the "Microsoft (070, 071, 074, 075, 076)" program option when registering for a test.

If you take the 70-620 exam (MCTS Vista Config) that can also count toward the client exam or elective for the MCSA/MCSE 2003.

Correct me if i'm wrong but isnt the upgrade exam going to just give you the MCTS's and you still have to write the Server admin exam (70-646).

It appears I was mistaken -- thanks for clarifying. The Train Signal blog read like you only needed that exam if you were coming from an MCSA (at least that's how I interpreted it).

Something else of interest that I came across while looking into it was in this blog: http://blogs.msdn.com/trika/archive/2007/06/14/windows-server-2008-certification-paths.aspx

Apparently the EA will not encompass the SA like the MCSE did with the MCSA. So you will need to take the extra exam if you want to be an SA as well as an EA.
