SDM & CNA practice

I need to get familiar with SDM & CNA.
Just wondering if anyone can direct me
to a free remote server where I can log on and
can get comfortable with it before taking the exam.
I have an older router that doesn't support SDM

Is SDM required knowledge for the CCNA exam? I was figuring it would all be CLI.

Hi,

This is correct, you'll need to know how to install SDM on the router or on the PC and you also need to know how to configure DHCP and NAT using SDM, this is only for the CCENT exam.

You can download SDM for free on cisco web side but you need to register first.

The 640-802 CCNA exam has the following topics that include SDM

    * Configure, verify and troubleshoot DHCP and DNS operation on a router.(including: CLI/SDM)

    * Access and utilize the router to set basic parameters.(including: CLI/SDM)

    * Configure and apply ACLs based on network filtering requirements.(including: CLI/SDM)

    * Configure and apply an ACLs to limit telnet and SSH access to the router using (including: SDM/CLI)

    * Configure NAT for given network requirements using (including: CLI/SDM)

When in doubt, check the exam blueprint

I wanted to learn SDM too, but my 2514 wont support it, so i googled all the routers that support it and came across the 831 SOHO router...Its actually pretty cheap..bought for $30. Has the latest 12.4 IOS and SDM installed on PC works like charm...

thanks. I just took a look on ebay and a 831 router
is going to cost me about $150.
I'm already a little familar with SDM so
hopefully I won't be drilled with SDM questions.

SDM will work with 1700 series routers as well
you can pick up a 2610XM fairly cheep and it will be useful in other areas as well.

just wanted to make sure this will support SDM tool before buying.
Don't know what IOS version this is. I'll ask the seller.

Feel stupid asking this question, but I cannot download SDM.

When trying to download, the login box keeps coming up and I enter anonymous as UserName and my email address as the Password.

It doesn't accept this and keeps prompting me for the UserName and Password.

I am logged in with my CCO account.

Tried Firefox, IE enabled passive FTP etc. What am I missing?

Just noticed in Todd lammle's book that SDM is supported from Cisco 830 series to 7301.
Guess it won't work with the 804 or will it?

I also got the login box asking for the PW and username for my laptop but
not for my desktop. Anyway I downloaded
from my desktop and saved the file then transfered to my laptop
and installed it. I also downloaded the lastest SDM from cisco's website.
I followed the instruction on the help file to launch the SDM demo version
and entered 127.0.0.1 but after clicking on the SDM icon on my desktop
I get a "unable to launch SDM blah blah blah..." either because the ip address or hostname
is not valid or HTTP/HTTPS is dabled on the router.
Do I need to configure my linksys router to enable HTTP or HTTPS?

Just figured out the problem. 127.0.0.1 doesn't work cause my laptop is not
connected directly to my NIC. I typed in my router ip address and presto
it worked. Only now its being blocked by my popup which i will disable in a second.
Hope this info helps for anyone who is having a similar problem.

almost there but now i get a "please type your SSH username and password"
I'm just trying to run the demo version of SDM didn't expect this
to pop up. Any ideas?

Hi,

First connect your PC like this: PC--Switch--Router using a straight ethernet cable, then install SDM in your PC and configure your router for SDM,

R(config)#username cisco privilege 15 secret cisco123
R(config)#ip http server
R(config)#ip http secure-server
R(config)#ip http authentication local

R(config)#line vty 0 4
 privilege level 15
 login local
 transport input telnet ssh

Configure your router interface in the same network that your PC and test it (ping), if everything is correct start your SDM shortcut and put the IP address that you put in the router and you are ready to go.

If you did all this, let us know what is the exact error that you got.

Also, you have to run java in your PC to use SDM.

What routers/IOS versions will support sdm? I'll google it in a moment but i'm asking just in case...

i looked it up and it looks like 2600 routers will support it. If my 2620 will support it, i'll let someone play with it for a while.

and use their SDM tool so I can play around with.

Don't want to buy a router at this point cause I plan
to take the test hopefully within the next 2-3 weeks.

Don't worry, I feel dumber as I couldn't even figure out how to download it. Well now that I've got it, going to try my luck on installing it.

It does work in Demo mode.

I found the trick is not to enter 127.0.0.1 at the initial Launcher window. Use the pull down and pick 10.10.10.1. The browser then launches and opens another window asking for an IP address. At this point enter 127.0.0.1 and finally SDM comes up in Demo mode.

Strange stuff, hope I understand this logic some day.

Except that the ip address 10.101.10.1 did not work so
i typed in my router ip address (192.168.1.1) and then
in the second window I typed in 127.0.0.1 and presto!
Don't know why this info wasn't included in the help file
that came with the demo version.

I have a 2610 router and am trying to find out if it will work with SDM.

"sh ver" tells me "Cisco 2610 (MPC860) processor (revision 0x00)"

I take it it's not the required 2610xm then?

You can run SDM will GNS3, there is a documented process to add a loopback adapter to your PC and the attach the loopback to a router inside of GNS3, it will give you everything you need to become familiar with SDM.
