Apparently this group is given full control whenever a new folder is created, who are members of this group? Whats its purpose?

Is this what you are referring to:
    The LocalSystem Account

LocalSystem is a pseudo-account for running system processes and handling system-level tasks. The account is available on the local system only. You can't change the settings for the LocalSystem account with the user administration tools. Users can't log on to a computer with this account.

    Ah yes, the System group....

Well, I can tell you that it is not supported on any NAS solution we have. Of course, it probably would work on a Windows Storage server 2003 NAS.

We used to have one of our software programs data files stored on the NAS. Problem was, the software periodically crashed. We later found out from the Vendor that they make use of the SYSTEM group with their software for accessing certain things... They didn't give much detail.

As it is, we ended up setting the data files on the Print server running Windows 2000 server. Since then we have had no problems.

So, there is my experience with the SYSTEM group.

Thanks for the feedback guys. So its only a local account, used to run system processes on the computer. Its displayed as a group rather than a user though.

Some system processes acting as a user to do some function, they will become member of the system group. No matter which user is log in the system, the processes still have credential to run. Here, the subject is not a human user but a system user.
What is done is done, what yet to be done will be done. While in the process of doing, enjoy it.
