Cheaper Layer 3 Switch

dr_jared88dr_jared88 Member Posts: 20 ■□□□□□□□□□
I am looking to purchase a layer 3 switch. Does anybody know any good models that can be bought for a decent price used on somewhere like ebay? Of course it must be a Cisco brand switch :)

Thanks!

You're best bet is the 3550. You're looking at around $500-600 minimum.

Any suggestions as to where to purchase used cisco equipment, or ebay about my best bet?

If you're looking to get one fast then just hit ciscokits.com, but if you're patient you can probably save some money by going the ebay route...

    Gee what a helpful link.

    They have a 3550 SMI for $1299

Those go for $700-800 on sites like ciscokits and horizon datacom

And for around $600-700 on ebay

    Methinks we have a spammer

one more really stupid question. are all 3550's layer 3? I believe they are; I just don't want to to make the mistake of buying one and finding out it isn't lol

Yeah the 3550's are (all the ones with 3550 in the name). The come in two versions, SMI and EMI which determin what features they support. It's basically an IOS upgrade to go from SMI to EMI. You won't have things like EIGRP, OSPF, and BGP with the SMI version.

the 3524 and 3548 are NOT 3550's, they are a L2 switch only.

It must be the caffeine. I've been working on Tokyo time since January.... and that means I've just "worked through the night" again icon_eek.gif

Is it just an IOS version difference or are there any differences in the ASICS used between the SMI and EMI?
