For CCENT, you can study on your own. Recommended resources include:
- ICND1 Official Study Guide by Wendell Odom (Cisco Press)
- CBT Nuggets videos (
www.cbtnuggets.com
)
- Trainsignal videos (
www.trainsignal.com
)
- This site (techexams.net) has resources under the Cisco section.
For classes, there are companies who offer ICND1 and INTRO courses. The ones I've seen range in the 5-day timeline and typically are $1000-3000 USD. But this will vary depending on what company/program/region you live in.

The
Cisco Network Academy
courses may be offered by your local Community College. This has the advantage of an instructor and a school Cisco lab. Some people like the structure of classes and "being forced" to keep up with the class.
Self-study could be cheaper -- even after you build a small home lab. But not everyone has the motivation and dedication to keep at it if, and when, the going gets tough.

It is certainly possible to study on your own, and classes are available.
It really depends on you.
Do you have the discipline/willpower to pick up a book and read it through?
Do you have the money and time to give for the classes?
If you have the money and time, take the classes. You'll be able to practice with real equipment and can ask questions.
Otherwise, it's the books.

I haven't figured this site out yet -- I just knows it takes me a while to find my old academy even though I know exactly where it is.
The regular
Cisco Network Academy Website
is probably easier to figure out.
