DNS---SOA and NS records

MS Press briefly mentions these records but skips detail in Chapter 4.
It seems these records are fundamental to DNS working properly.
I have a few questions...
Should DNS clients worry about these records?
What is the format of the NS record?
I found information on SOA record, but have limited info on the NS record.
Thanks
