need seperate partition for Grub?

Hey I've tried to many installs with four different distro's on two different hd's now and none are working! I understand that the first part of /dev/hdd1 should be carved out for Grub is that right?

Didn't work so I tried format the whole thing:

dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/hdd

So now there can't possibly be a bad boot sector and it still isn't working! What gives??

I believe the grub files go into the /boot folder. You can either create a seperate partition for the /boot or you can just create a / partition and then all of the necessary files will copy go into the boot folder on the / partition.

You need to be more specific -- what exactly are you doing when you try to install your distro? When you say it isn't working, what messages are you given?
