VMWare

Since I'll be starting to use VMWare relatively soon, I was wondering if anyone here had any recommendations for particularly good resources to bone up on my knowledge...preferably books, but online resources work too.

There is a lot of documentation on VMWares website in PDF format.

What version(s) do you plan on working with?

CBTnuggets has some videos out on GSX/ESX and VM infrastructure. i would start there..

Trainsignal is updated for 3.5. The Nuggets are still at 3.0.

I believe this is the newest book (January), but it only covers 3.0 as well. http://www.amazon.com/VMware-ESX-Server-Enterprise-Virtualization/dp/0132302071/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1207148038&sr=8-1

Are you going to be using their ESX product?

Actually, I'm not even clear on the specifics of versions and such. I suppose I should do some research at VMWare's website first, lol.

And I keep forgetting about that new virtualization forum. >.>

Player - Free, limited functionality, cannot create virtual machines.

Server - Free, good functionality, cannot create XP/2000 Pro machines (according to documentation, but there might be a workaround), sufficient for most people

Workstation - $190, has some extra features that were worth the money for me, but does lack some of the Server features

    ESX - Expensive, enterprise-level product

You really don't need any documentation for anything other than ESX. I setup my VM lab just be going through the menus. It's pretty straight-forward.

Also be sure to check out IT Idiots episodes 13, 17, 26, 33, and 39 for their Virtualization instruction: http://itidiots.com/
