Failed 640-802

I'm somewhat confused because I wanted to see what the exam was like first hand and must say that it was challenging, especially timewise. My score was 788 out of the necessary 825 but my breakdowns seem horrible. I'm not sure if I can brush up some and try again soon or wait awhile and go way deeper before trying again. I only missed by 37 pts but here's my scores:

Describe how a network works - 71%
Configure, verify and troubleshoot a switch with VLAN's and interswitch communications - 88%
Implement an IP addressing scheme and IP Services to meet network requirements ... - 87%
Configure, verify, and troubleshoot basic router operation and routing on Cisco devices - 63%
Explain and select the appropriate administrative tasks required for a WLAN - 0%
Identify security threats to a network and describe general methods to mitigate those... - 33%
Implement, verify, and troubleshoot NAT and ACL's in a medium-size Enterprise... - 42%
Implement and verify WAN links - 66%

Some of these areas seem terrible, yet I miss by only 37 pts. I basically have no hands on experience with this stuff other than a little playing around with a 2600 and 2950 but years as a PC tech. I'm trying to get further by going the networking route so want to start here, then CCNP. I feel I have a decent knowledge of the stuff and figured I'd learn more depth during the CCNP. I read the Lammle book and practiced the tests and flash cards. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thx.

Sounds like your real close i would say schedule it again for the next week and go take it again. I am sure you will pass it this time just study for another week and go try again.

If you want, you could also look at the following for additional practice:

    For practice tests:
www.selftestsoftware.com (owned by the people who own www.transcender.com, has 10 to 15% less material and a different rebate policy but is like 50 bucks or mroe cheaper than transcender.com package).

For a good study package for reading material and also some quiz questions you could look at:
    www.thebryantadvantage.com

His study package is very good, comparable to Lammle's but maybe he can clarify some points to help you. His quiz questions are (much) fewer than those listed above because they give you hundreds of questions to work with.

I recommend both packages (bryant's and either sts or transcender).

I hope this helps. Good luck on your retake and we will be pulling for you. Let us know how you do.

Oh and lastly, if you have some extra cash, you could buy the cbtnuggets videos or the trainsignal videos, both are supposed to be very good.

    Best Regards,
    G.

I recommend either Cisco Networking Academy or CBT Nuggets. I am recertifying and just passed the ICND1 with a 948 after failing the CCNA last summer twice. Decided to go the two test route. Jeremy with CBTNuggets is great. I most likely will buy the CCNP pack when after I get my CCNA.

i am sorta in the same boat as you
i have a voucher for 640-802 about to expire, so i may just take the shot in the dark

but when i don't pass it, (i'm not negative on myself, just know with my limted schedule and the expiration i will not be at the level i want to be at) i plan the dual exam route.

i have the ICND1 book to use (once it arrives)
did you feel you absorbed the material better doing the dual method?

It is a time thing with me. I took most of the time available for the ICND1. There is just too much stuff in the CCNA exam anymore for me to take it in one shot.
