Regarding Resume order.

pandimuspandimus Member Posts: 651
I had my resume done for me and then revised it myself. The person i had write it originally put my Certifications, skills, honors and acievments and my proffesional development sections below my work experience.

Most of my family and friends who i showed it to afterword keeps telling me i should move all that stuff up to the top. Because alot of my experience is with aircraft and i only have 4 years of networking/helpdesk/pc repair experience. I have decent amount of work experience but they say I should cut it down a bit to not make it so jumbled. But i am unsure.. What do you guys think?

Most definitely - reduce it in size and just put anything that is pertinent.

The best thing to do when sending out resumes is to customise them for then position you are applying for.

As an employer of many staff in a very busy and high turnover industry I never had time to read all that came across my desk. I would quickly scan them looking for any key words and then move on. Those that were brief and concise got more attention, but those that were just brief usually were very poor and only good for showing how badly the education system has slipped.

I agree with the proposed order, I usually start with a short bio including general skills and personality info, school diplomas/education and then certs, and then work experience.

I was actually about to advice the opposite, but I think you make a very good point. I'm used to reading and writing resumes in a time when there was a shortage of IT pro's, even irrelevant work experience increased chances of getting the job. But I think you make a very good point, nowadays hundreds or thousand apply for the same job...

But I think that if it is even remotely related, or includes something like management skills, it should definitely be mentioned, especially when someone doesn't have a lot of IT work experience.

So you would say that some blank space is not a bad thing?

Also i did redo the order.. I moved CErts below my summary and technical skills after that..

i tried moving all the things above my personal experience, but it didnt look appealing to the eye at all. The wife agree'd

So i put the honors and achievements below my work experience and personal development below that..

Looks decent now.. it is 2 pages long, but the personal experience does have a lot of stuff in it.

If you guys dont mind.. I will provide a link.. you can review it and just add a suggestion.. Of course if your too busy that is fine.. I removed my name and address from it

Also the wife thinks that i should delete the cost of any project that i was in involved with.. I wholehartedly disagree with that, i think it emphasized the scope of projects ive dealt with.. For instance the ability to be the person resposable for a 50 million dollar acft is a big deal.. What do you guys think?

    REFERENCES:

All of this is centered, bold in places, and spaced out but you get this idea. I always try to keep my resume at 2 pages long and I revise it weekly if I see a cool new idea or something.

I actually put my Education below my work experience, I like the overall flow of the resume from a personal standpoint that way. Alot of companies tend to like so many years experience now before they ever look at education depending on the job. I think of it as giving them my objective, leading them in with my profile, enticing em with my experience, and hooking em on education and certifications. But another reason I do that is my experience currently out weighs my education background, when that changes in the future I may swap them around.

The only thing I see you may want to do is skim it down slightly overall, when I look at it one of the first things that I thought was it's overcrowded and bunched together. But different HR or IT people look for different things on resumes, so 20 people may like one crowded and 20 may like it short and sweet.

I don't know what the standard is in the US, but to me it looks like an excellent resume. If I was looking for someone with your skills, I would definitely invite you for an interview.

I don't think mentioning the costs would hurt, but you could save it for the interview...

I do have a question, is it better to list references on your resumes or say they can be requested? I list mine but I am thinking about changing it to request that way they have a reason to call and talk to me personally.

What i noticed with some job applications is that they will directly ask you for references.. Thats why i didnt include mine. If they need them i have them ready to send to them.

sometimes it's best to have a job in mind when writing a resume. when i was laid off a few years ago, because i was looking for it work, i had my it resume and a general one (just incase).

the it-orientated resume got perfected over a number of goes, and i did get a call from one firm i sent a resume to. my confidence was flying high at the time, but i was hoping to get word back from the people i presently work for.

the format i have generally used is along the lines of: name, address, phone and email; school an professional qualifications; employment history (succinct); personal statement (good qualities [relevant to specific market if desired], hobbies, goals, etc.

i think i used 12pt or 14pt and kept it to two sides of a4 sheet in length.

I used MS Word's proffesional resume template... icon_lol.gif

It's not the best way to do it.... but hey, it landed me the job I wanted.

I think resume style's differ from proffesion to proffesion. Like stuff you should mention first and things you should elaborate more...etc etc.

Magnanimous as the ocean, persistent as time.
