Right step to the get the basics of exchange server running?

Exchange 2003

1. Rigester a domain name
2.Create and MX record
3.Create an A record
4.Configure Recipient Policies to allow the domains you wish to receive/send mail

This all you need to do right?

Any help will be appreciated if there are some additional steps

Having a correctly configured Active Directory would be a pretty big step there, too. Also there must be a global catalog in the same site as exchange.

What about your MX record(s)? How should it be set up?

What about opening the edge firewall?

What about configuring message size limits?

What about SPF records?

What about an antispam solution?

What about an antivirus solution? Do you need a smart host?

There are a lot of things you need to consider.

what is an SPF record?

A text file record in DNS that stores a list of servers that are allowed to send record. It is created so a server that does SenderID filtering will check the sending server for spoofing.

So for example, your domain is bleh.com. Someone from mail from hello.com. Bleh.com server will do a SenderID check which checks the SPF record for hello.com and sees if the server that sent the mail for hello.com is in the SPF record. If it is not, it detects it as a spoof and depending on SenderID configuration, it could deny the mail from being received or could raise the SCL level which gives it a better chance of being blocked.

Also, don't forget to create your PTR record for all servers that will send mail from your domain.
