PCI-E Video Card for Gaming.

I bought a game “World In Conflict” about a month ago and cannot play it. It’s my video card which is a cheapo VisionTek X300 128mb DDR which I bought 2 years ago when I built the system.
So I looked at PCI-E cards and they easily go into the 300+ range and I just want something that will work now and for a little while in the future. I really don’t want to spend much more than 150 and the game recommends a GeForce 8 series(8600 or better). Those look to be in the 175 to 250 range.
I’ll probably build a new system in the next 2 years. (So I can use my current system to mess around with VMWare and Linux more.)
Any recommendations? Is the 8600 worth it since I don’t do a lot of gaming?
WinXP Pro
ASUS A8N-E
Athlon X64 3800+
2 gig Corsair XMS DDR 400
80 gig IDE system drive
500 gig SATA Mirror (game runs off of)

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130082 in particular. That stomps the 8600, and it's $114 with a $30 mail-in-rebate. -

I couldn't agree more. I recently built a gaming box with an Intel E6850, Geforce 8800GT (G92), 4GB Ram, etc. For the price and performance the 8800GT is kicking around all other card's at the moment. Unless you want to pay two to three time's as much, then you could go for the dual PCI-E, or dual GPU card. Which imo is a waste.
The 8800GT is great right now, but I thought I heard somewhere that the 9800 series card is due out soon. Mind you it wont be cheap, but it depends on what your wanting to game with.
My 8800GT Play's CoD4 maxed out, Crsis on High full AA. If you are looking into the Nvidia brand try to buy with EVGA if you can, no im not affiliated with them in any way. But they do offer a 90 day step up program along with a lifetime warrenty on their product's. So, if in 90 day's the 9 series card's come rocking out, you can pay the different of the two and upgrade. -
