OK, So I recently graduated with an a.a.s it network specialist and have been spending the past few months trying to begin my career. I haven't had the best of luck until i applied for a position doing pos instillations for a company which i have been employed with for the past 8 years. My current job background and it degree would be a perfect match for this position, so i had the utmost confidence going into the job interview. Well, after the successful interview the manager in charge of the pos project told me that hr would be in contact with me within one week. Well, after one week passed and still no word from hr i decided to email him to see what the status of the job was, and also to reiterate my interest for the job. He replies and tells me that he has already found two other individuals for the positions. He then goes on to tell me that the difference between them and me , was that they sent a thank you letter after their interview, and i didn't. So with that being known i was very disappointed and let down by the managers response on why i didn't get the position. Is this normal?? Oh well, back to square one.

It happens. I had a job like that which everything seemed perfect and even asked when I would be able to start. A few days later someone from within the company wanted to apply for the job and I guess got it. They said they were looking at hiring two people for it anyways but I nevered heard much back from the recuitor.

Personally I always thought thank you letters were lame and a poor attempt to brown nose your way into a job -- either they liked me enough based on the interview and my credentials, or they didn't think I was the right one for the job.

Move along, there are other jobs out there. Hang in there and you'll find it!

I learned that in a transition class you always send a thank you letter for the interview. You should already have that done prior to the interview and tune it up afterwards and get it in the mail asap.

Unfortunately, lame, brown-nosing methodology is often equated with proper etiquette. I've been taught that thank-you letters are standard procedure as well. Now you know for next time; don't beat yourself up over it.

I got a job a couple times over someone else cause I was the one who gave a thank you letter. It's etiquette, not brown-nosing imo.

As a former POS installer and repair tech myself, I know that customer skills are very prised by management. During the interview, it's quite possible that you were being scrutinized for the level of courtesy and attentiveness that you showed. Your actions in the field reflect on the company and any future business it does with a customer. Managers tend to believe that anyone can be taught tech skills, but good people (and sales) skills come from one's own personality and therefore are much more difficult to teach.

Listen to the good advice here.

But most importantly this job didn't work out for a reason, you never know it could be a blessing in disguise.

Hang in there. Before you know it you will have even a better job, and that interview will be a distant memory.

Oh ya, one more thing. Interviewing is a skill, just think of this one as practice.

Every job I have ever gotten I was pretty much stress free during the interview. So just keep practicing and you will eventually get what you deserve.

I really appreciate everyones input and advice. I am taking this so personally because out of the four months i have been looking for a job, this has been the closest i have gotten. But for the most part I have learned my lesson and with this incident behind me, it will just make me try even harder to find that job. In the end everything will work itself out.

Is there anything in particular you say in the thank you letter? I'm glad I found out about this before I start applying for any other jobs.

Seems kinda corny in my opinion too, but whatever floats their boat.
