Question about Volume Shadow Copy

Ok I was reading the Microsoft Press Book on page 6-40. It states the volume shadow copy enables users to access saved versions of files that have accidentally deleted or damaged.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but in conjunction isn't volume shadow copy is also used to backup files that are currently in use as well?

This will then take a copy of the open files and will backup these allowing the files to be backed up and the original ones to continue being used.
