I used 2 books, The Sybex and Exam Cram and found them both to be very helpful. I would also recommend, if you don't have money to buy equipment, using some sort of simulation program so you can get practice at configuring the routers/switches. I personally used the CCNA Virtual Lab Gold Edition. There are better products out there, but I think that product is enough to get a basic understanding of the CCNA configuration requirements.

It takes patience to study for Cisco exams.
Cisco has many pages on the Internet about their devices. You need to know the hardware and they provide a lot of knowledge.
