WAN port on 871 router

StrikeZoneStrikeZone Member Posts: 13 ■□□□□□□□□□
I am having a hard time getting the WAN(Fa4) port to come up on an 871 router I bought on Ebay. I have tried connecting to my DSL, to a netgear switch, to a laptop w/crossover cable. The status is and protocol is down. The only way I've gotten to come up is by connecting it with a crossover to E0 on my 2501, but then only 871 side is up and not the 2501. The 2501 will come up when connected to any of the other sources. I have tried manually setting the speed and duplex but had no luck. Not sure what my next step should be. Thanks!

is the link down as well or just line down?

can you display a sh int with the 871 on the different connections you have been trying

This one is when connected to a laptop with a crossover:

FastEthernet4 is up, line protocol is down
Hardware is PQUICC_FEC, address is 001c.0ed9.dc64 (bia 001c.0ed9.dc64)
    Internet address is 192.168.2.1/24
MTU 1500 bytes, BW 10000 Kbit, DLY 1000 usec,
    reliability 255/255, txload 1/255, rxload 1/255
    Encapsulation ARPA, loopback not set
    Keepalive set (10 sec)
    Auto-duplex, 10Mb/s, 100BaseTX/FX
ARP type: ARPA, ARP Timeout 04:00:00
Last input never, output 00:16:54, output hang never
Last clearing of "show interface" counters never
Input queue: 0/75/0/0 (size/max/drops/flushes); Total output drops: 0
    Queueing strategy: fifo
    Output queue: 0/40 (size/max)
    5 minute input rate 0 bits/sec, 0 packets/sec
    5 minute output rate 0 bits/sec, 0 packets/sec
    0 packets input, 0 bytes
    Received 0 broadcasts, 0 runts, 0 giants, 0 throttles
    0 input errors, 0 CRC, 0 frame, 0 overrun, 0 ignored
    0 watchdog
0 input packets with dribble condition detected
    7 packets output, 984 bytes, 0 underruns
0 output errors, 0 collisions, 3 interface resets
    0 babbles, 0 late collision, 0 deferred
0 lost carrier, 0 no carrier
0 output buffer failures, 0 output buffers swapped out

And this is connected to a 2501:

FastEthernet4 is up, line protocol is up
Hardware is PQUICC_FEC, address is 001c.0ed9.dc64 (bia 001c.0ed9.dc64)
    Internet address is 192.168.2.1/24
MTU 1500 bytes, BW 10000 Kbit, DLY 1000 usec,
    reliability 255/255, txload 1/255, rxload 1/255
    Encapsulation ARPA, loopback not set
    Keepalive set (10 sec)
    Half-duplex, 10Mb/s, 100BaseTX/FX
ARP type: ARPA, ARP Timeout 04:00:00
Last input never, output 00:00:13, output hang never
Last clearing of "show interface" counters never
Input queue: 0/75/0/0 (size/max/drops/flushes); Total output drops: 0
    Queueing strategy: fifo
    Output queue: 0/40 (size/max)
    5 minute input rate 0 bits/sec, 0 packets/sec
    5 minute output rate 0 bits/sec, 0 packets/sec
    0 packets input, 0 bytes
    Received 0 broadcasts, 0 runts, 0 giants, 0 throttles
    0 input errors, 0 CRC, 0 frame, 0 overrun, 0 ignored
    0 watchdog
0 input packets with dribble condition detected
    11 packets output, 2112 bytes, 0 underruns
0 output errors, 0 collisions, 3 interface resets
    0 babbles, 0 late collision, 0 deferred
0 lost carrier, 0 no carrier
0 output buffer failures, 0 output buffers swapped out

When connected to the 2501 I get a link light on the 871 but not the 2501.

hmmm will it work if you connect the fast ethernet port to the laptop with just a regular patch cable?
  • StrikeZoneStrikeZone Member Posts: 13 ■□□□□□□□□□
Nope, but I can connect the laptop to any of the LAN ports with a straight-though cable.

Ok so this works. I'm kind of confused on what topology you are trying to setup. Could you map it out.
