I am trying to help a friend print from her laptop to a printer connected to an XP system they are networked with, any advice?

It'll work pretty much the same way as adding a shared printer under XP. Just make sure you have Vista drivers available for the printer. I haven't done printing from Vista through an XP shared printer but it all worked great for me for Vista through a Linux shared printer.

I am just adding to what has already been mentioned byb undomiel. All you need to do is if the printer is connected to the XP computer is share the printer from the xp computer and then on the Vista computer go to add printers and choose the option for shared pinters and type the name and path for the shared printer and it will ask for the drivers so you will need the printer cd/dvd or unless its a common printer that Vista has drivers pre-installed already and you should be ready to print.
