Port 110 and 25

Hi,
TCP port 110 is used for POP3 Traffic and 25 for SMTP traffic and both are for emails.
Could you explain to me the differences and what they do in more details. Or perhaps it is enough to know what I know for my exam and I should not bother too much as the exam questions are not that detailed?
