Most people agree that the best practice for studying for the MS exams are a few different books, one being MS Press and another source; most prefer sybex or examcram. Then you have to follow it by hands on labs, the more experience you already have in the field, the less labs you have to setup and do practice runs. Lastly if you are more of a visual learner, you can get into CBT Nuggets.

No one source will give you a carbon copy of the exam, it is however you fault for not doing enough research and knowing the layout of MS type exams and their detailed paragraphs. If you do enough research and googling, you will find that most guides tell you to be prepared for the lengthy exams and to use multiple sources to study from. Those that get away with studying less than you either have more experience in the field or just more hands on with the labs.

that's why i'm asking where on technet can i find info for the 70-270 to fill in the detail gaps that my sybex book is missing. i messed up on some questions on security, security templates and printer priority on the exam. where can i find this in depth material on technet? direct link would be great. thx in advance.

first off, welcome to the boards. Secondly, you should win for "Best first post" of 2008. Couldn't have put that better myself.

I took the test last week without studying at all for it and got a 654. I did it cause of the second shot offer and cause I knew that I could either pass it or get close to it. As for the practice tests and all that crap well i say who cares. If you know the material practice tests arent needed other then to refresh your knowledge. Microsoft words their questions to confuse you and make you have to re-read it. If you know the material and didnt just memorize it then passing shouldnt be a problem practice test or not.

went to ms technet site and saw the section first time user and ask me to register to get benefits. so i put in my windows live id, then it asked me a "benefit access number" (Benefit Access Number, Subscriber ID, or MSPP Technical Contact ID). i tried to put in the microsoft id that it send me after i fail the exam, but it said it is invalid benefit number. so i dont think my microsoft id is the benefit number. it seems like too much trouble to find one simple thing. i want more in depth info for the material cover on 20-270....where is it on technet? any1 got a direct link? much appreciated.

Just do a search for the topic you're looking for, i.e. NTFS permissions

To be perfectly blunt, your killing us here. Please re-read this entire post. You've been given 6-7 great study resources and lab advise. That's more than enough in depth material.

BTW - The people who gave bad reviews on the MS Press books are the ones who failed the test. For the 3 bad reviews, I'd be willing to bet I could easily find 10 people on this site alone who thought the book was good.

Its disappointing to fail, even if you did no preparation. Thats why failure sometimes is good as it brings humility. Even in football, a good player misses an obvious shot for goal, looks at his boots or curse the turf.

With multiple choice questions, people can guess and pass. You can over think without common sense and fail even if you're a pro.

I believe that in as much as experience counts, thorough preparation is required even if its just discipline, composure and attitude. If its a goal to achieve, put all to it and make use of all available resources, even the help in windows itself. I've never found a book or material without pros and cons from users even the holy book.

Don't go blaming books, hunt for materials that will help in your success.
