bus-powered USB hub

When I connect a portable USB hard disk to a four port USB hub that is connected to my portable computer, the hub shuts down. Is it because the bus-powered hub is not able to supply the power to the USB hard drive? I think so.
Or it is because of the bandwidth problem?
Thanks!

Try to plug the hard drive directly into the laptop
Try to plug the usb hub and another random USB device into the hub and see if it operates.
Should answer your questions. -

That's going to suck up a lot of power. USB doesn't carry a lot of power to begin with, so if you're plugging additional devices in as well, you're probably overwhelming it.
Like Mishra said, go the trial-and-error route. That'll get you your answer pretty quick. -

Be aware if the system is a desktop and has USB ports from and back use the back ones as the front are sometimes no self powered and would work in the same way as you 4 port hub.
You can check the usage of the power of the hub within device manager
