Sysvol/Software Deployment GPO

thesemantheseman Member Posts: 230
Afternoon,

I recently deployed an .msi package to our entire organization via a GPO. It works fine for every office, except one.

The error in the event log stated that it could not find the installation source. Odd, I thought, so I browsed to sysvol (by both server\sysvol and domain\sysvol) and if I try to run the msi manually I get the error "Please verify that this is a valid Installer file".

You can run the .msi on the local server with no issues. You can also copy the .msi to the local pc and run it without problems. DCdiag and Netdiag all pass, no warnings/errors.

So I says, seems like a permissions problem of some sort. Only the permissions are fine. I also tried giving the user and computer FC to the items. No change.

I have also re-copied the .msi files manually into the folder, overwriting the old ones in case they were corrupt.

Has anyone got any ideas for me?

-Travis

The file that the client can't find isn't the .msi, it's the package definition file on the sysvol. You probably have a sysvol replication problem.

Check the FRS Log in the event viewer of the DC with the PDC Emulator role. It is possible that that server has gone into journal lock on the disk volume holding the SYSVOL folder. When that happens, replication of the SYSVOL does not occur (although normal AD syncroniztion does - replmon will show that replication is successful). You will need to add or edit a registry key (I can't find a link to it right now but will keep looking) and restart the File Replication Service to force the sysvol to replicate throughout the domain.

The only downside is you will lose the sysvol changes - such as any new GPOs or GPO changes - since the journal lock occured. After you fix the journal lock error, you will need to redploy the msi.

Edit: Here is the registry key and value you need. It's listed in the Event Log message:

This might be a sysvol replication errors. Any event logs regarding this in FRS?

There are errors regarding FRS in the event viewer:

    1) Following is a summary of errors
    2) DC X cannot reach DC Y
    3) DC X has enabled replication to DC Y after multiple tries.

I do expect these to occur as they are WAN connections.

My obvious question would be - if sysvol was not replicating would the MSI's even be in there? The were originally copied into the PDC's sysvol, then they replicated out.

Also, if I manually copy a file to C:\windows\sysvol\sysvol on that local server, I cannot run it directly from the server (hence why I thought of permission problems)

I'm guessing that it would be a corrupt\incomplete version of the MSI from bad replication. I know the journal wrap can be caused if you start to run out of hard drive (this happened to me once icon_redface.gif )

    Could try and run FRSDiag?

You may have to go back further in the event log to see where the journal lock occurred - if that is the problem. Also, you could try restarting the FRS service on the remote DC just to give it a little kick to get going.

This is off the top of my head, but the file that defines the distributed application is located in the SYSVOL at SYSVOL\(domain)\Policies\(GPO SID)\Machine\(software guid).(something). You can find the SIDs and GUIDs listed in the properties pages of the GPO and software setting. Check and make sure the file is on the remote DC. If not, it still sounds like you have a FRS problem.

As you can see, disk space was an issue until late yesterday afternoon. I can't see this being the issue though, when you can run the msi's from the server itself??? Also, why wouldn't I be able to run an msi I just copied into the share? (June 13th - 3:30pm). The disk has plenty of free space now.

But I am open to suggestions of course!

Just curious, is there a reason why you can't place the MSI in a centralized location (e.g., shared drive, path, etc.) without replicating it out to all of your DCs. Personally speaking, I don't put anything in the Sysvol that just doesn't absolutely have to be there. All of the installation packages I push via GP pull the installer file from a common drive.

+1 I just keep my GPTs and logon scripts on this to keep the sysvol issues to a minimum

The reason being I wanted users to install from a local copy.

Using DFS is one method of doing that. This way I could point them to \\domain\sysvol\software_deployment\x.msi. I used sysvol because it is already in place, no need to create another dfs structure.

If we get people installing app's over the WAN they will complain about slow logins.

We set up an install point in each office that has a file server to use for GPO software installs. Then, create a GPO linked to that AD Site or the OU for that office's computers for the software install.

But then we only have 5 locations so it's not hard to manage. Maybe you have more locations that is feasible to manage like that.

Recent: 11/2019 - RHCSA (RHEL 7); 2/2019 - Updated VCP to 6.5 (just a few days before VMware discontinued the re-cert policy...)
    Working on: RHCE/Ansible
Future: Probably continued Red Hat Immersion, Possibly VCAP Design, or maybe a completely different path. Depends on job demands...

    Hi Blargoe,

Something odd that I noticed about using a site GPO for software deployment is that I never saw the stage "installing managed software etc".

The software did install, just no visible indication. Our users really like to see what we are doing with their PCs.

Have you also noticed this, or maybe I just didn't notice when it came up?

I've never encountered that before, not that I can recall anyway.
