An access server would be a Cisco devices that could connect to other Cisco devices.
A terminal server could be configured to accomplish the same thing.
I currently use a 16 port terminal server attached to my windows machine which gives me an additional 16 serial ports off of the pc. After making the cables, I was able to hook up 16 of my 19 Cisco devices at the same time via a console connection.
I then can console into every device without moving any cables ( I just have to open the appropriate saved hyperterm session)I don't claim to be an expert, but I sure would like to become one someday.
