nelnel Member Posts: 2,859 ■□□□□□□□□□

Im creating some labs for this topic whilst reading the icnd2 book but when i have came to configure the encapsulation on the router the command is not there! Im using IOS 12.2 and im sure ive read on the cisco site it does support it (but i cant find the link now). Could anyone confirm this?

You need IP Plus at a minimum.

Also make sure that the port is a Fastethernet port or it won't do trunking.

A 2600 will do router on a stick even without a FE port if you have IP Plus.

Yup, I had it working on a 2610 back when I was studying. I might still have the configuration saved somewhere if you're using the same platform and IOS.

icon_exclaim.gif802.1Q Encapsulation Support on Cisco 2600/3600 Series Routers
802.1Q encapsulation is now available on the built-in 10BaseT Ethernet interfaces of the Cisco 2610, 2611, and 2612 with Cisco IOS software 12.2(2)T and subsequent releases. Although this feature has been available on the Cisco 2600/3600 series since the release of Cisco IOS 12.1(5)T, support was previously limited to Fast Ethernet interfaces only. 802.1Q is not supported on any other Cisco 2600/3600 series 10BaseT Ethernet interface.

The 1720 DOESN'T support 802.1Q trunking on its Fast Ethernet port.

You need 12.2T or better and it needs to be IP Plus or better.

You need IP Plus or better if you want 802.1q on 12.2T. Its in IP Base in 12.3 and above.

You'll need more RAM and flash however to upgrade. Go poke around on the IOS Feature Navigator on the Cisco site and you'll see what version can do what and what the requirements are.
