What version of WSUS is covered on this exam?
Is there anywhere you can get updated exam objectives?

Heh, ok.. I have to do it..

You are the network administrator of contoso.com. All Servers run Windows 2003 Server. Your test is on 2003 Server. If you are deploying a windows update service application which one would you use and or study for? (Please choose 2)

    A. WSUS 2.0 works on Windows 2000 Server SP4 and later, though it would work on 2003 server you would have to be half brain dead to choose this one.

    B. WSUS 3.0 works on Windows 2003 Server and later and is the most obvious choice.

    C. Did I mention this test is testing you on Windows 2003 Server and thats why answer B would work great with this answer?

    D. This is defiantly not the answer.

Please choose answer's B and C and you can then view the following link.

I think the exam, which hasn't been updated in a while, still tests you on WSUS 2.0.
WSUS 3 didnt come out until what, a year and half ago? Anyway it would be nice if someone who has recently taken 290 could verify one way or the other.

To answer your other question, the objectives can be found here:

    Skills being measured

It does mention "Manage software update infrastructure" but does not mention the version. And really, I'm pretty sure WSUS is hit hard in 291, but not much in 290.
All things are possible, only believe.

Just recently took the 290. It did not test any any specific version, just the basic concepts of WSUS which are pretty much the same through all versions of SUS / WSUS

It wasn't version specific for me either when I took it. Just the basic concepts as kmfinegan1 has said.

Now that I think about it in the 291 there wasn't really anything version specific either as I recall.

I loved the WAY you answered, I just wasn't sure if it was the CORRECT answer. icon_lol.gif
Say, isn't it about this time of year that you get like 20 hours of daylight in Alaska?

Yes. It seems its bright all the time. Dont confuse that with sunny...

We have only had 2 days this summer over 70 degrees. Just set a state record. The last time was 1980 with 3 days over 70 degrees. This has been a lousy summer.

I took 290 and 291 in the past couple months and yeah, I don't remember them specifying any version. Just a general WSUS question or four.

Lucky you... I must have had 8 sims, no WSUS on mine.

Should an xp machine with sp3 be able to be seen by a wsus server using 2.0? The only computer that will show up is a 2003 server.
  • undomielundomiel Member Posts: 2,818
Assuming your policy is set up correctly I would then check on BITS and make sure you are using 2.0. I know that I had to update the clients over here before they would recognize the WSUS server.

While enabling the setting for Automatic Updates in the gpo, at the bottom of the box a line said:

Supported in Server 2003, xp sp1 and Win 2000 sp3.

Is a gpo required to get clients to show up in wsus? I tried deleting the gpo, did a gpupdate, the server 2003 machine continues to show in wsus but the xp sp3 machine doesn't.

Does BITS need to be installed on the xp machine? I thought i read somewhere that BITS came along with SP3.

BITS 2.0 is installed on wsus server.
  • undomielundomiel Member Posts: 2,818
You need the gpo to point the clients toward the server. Make sure the clients can communicate with the server properly. BITS 2.0 you need installed on the clients

    http://download.microsoft.com/download/9/7/6/976d1084-d2fd-45a1-8c27-a467c768d8ef/WSUS%20Client%20Diagnostic%20Tool.EXE

This contains the clientdiag.exe tool. Run this on one of the clients and see what it spits out. It will help give you some info to work with for why the client isn't updating.

Check the WindowsUpdate.log file in the windows directory on one of the clients. Check against this list: http://pagesperso-orange.fr/doc.jm/WU5-ERR.htm

It translates some of the error codes you may see.
