i have a very serious problem. for some reason my router boots to rommon, so i look on the cisco website to see how i can load my ios from here. i think i must have hit a wrong key or something, because now when i turn the router on, i get nothing for a few secs, and then garbage starts to show up. i have the ios on a disk and backed up to my pc. hyperterminal is configured right. did i somehow screw the pooch on this?

Check your baud rate. Should be 9600. If it has changed either on the router or in hyperterminal you will get garbage on the screen.

i got 9600/8/n/1/no flow.........the router booted up in rommon, i was following the guide from cisco to upgrade the ios. the last command is used was confreg xxxxx. i think thats where i messed up. right after that, i powered down the router and hyper terminal and started again. the router just spits garbage now, and will not go into rommon. that's where i'm trying to get to if possible

Try all the different speeds in hyperterminal then.

No problem. You should come across that in the CCNA when it tells you how to use Xmodem to upload a new IOS.
