What are some tricks of the trade that you use for managment of that rats nest of cables?

Label Schemes?
Colors of Cables?
Equipment?

Coloured cables, decent selection of patch cable lengths, a clipboard nearby with the various colour schemes and IDs, cable management channels in the rack and lots of velcro straps.

I prefer the velcro straps over the usual cable ties because you can just undo them instead of cutting.

No temporary kludges either because you or somebody else can't be bothered to find the right cable so they just use whatever is handy. Stuff like that will just linger around.
