    Some things to try:

-Try plugging the external drive into another computer to see if you can get it to work.
-Try using a software program to burn like XPCDBurner which I highly recommend. http://cdburnerxp.se/

If you're using XP, I don't think XP supports burning to DVDs from Windows explorer if I remember correctly. What OS are you using?

install the cdburnerxp software...put in a blank dvd+r and when try to burn files to it...it said "an error occurred while burning the disc. Most likely the disc is not usable. Usually, these errors happen if the inserted media is not compatible to the drive or of poor quality.

    (weInvalidMediaWriteMode) Media format not supported."

i dont think i have any problem with cd-rw disc thought.

natively, XP only supports DVD-RAM format burning. I would install a 3rd party app like nero and try to burn to DVD-R/RW etc.

I definitely recommend trying the drive on a different computer, see if it has the same errors. If it works fine on another computer then you may be having some filters issues.

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060/EN-US/

That walks you through clearing your upper and lower filters. Don't forget to back up your registry before hand.

somehow i dont think nero will be able to detect blank dvd -r or +r on my external dvd drive. it is working fine with blank cd-rw. as soon as i put in a blank dvd -+r, it won't recognize....oh well..thx for every1 help.

Are you sure it's not a CD-RW/DVD drive? Have you burned DVD media in it before?

here are the following symbols/words on the external dvd drive: compact disc ReWriteable, RW DVD+Rewritable, DVD R/RW.

here is a pix of the dvd drive:

    i think i might got a cd-rw/dvd drive instead of a dvd-rw.
