You could have saved quite a bit by buying separately. You can get the 2500s pretty cheap. Did you clarify what type of switches you will get? It states 2950-24. You are going to want the 2950s as they have the command structure that is used on the exam.

They're 24 port 2950s running the standard image.

When you do get the switches, update the IOS on them. All of them are running an older version. You should be able to download the IOS files for a 2950 for free from Cisco so long as you have a CCO user. You don't need a SMARTnet contract.

What type of switches you ask? They are 24 port 2950s. I thought 2950s where what I needed.

Also with 7 routers and 3 2950s I really shouldn't have to waste any more time with trying to piece anything together. It really sounded like a good deal to me. icon_sad.gif

    Ah I see 24 port 2950s icon_lol.gif

I read it as either 2950 or 2924 too early in the morning icon_redface.gif

The switches are great and they usually run upward of $100 on their own, but none of the routers support SDM so if you want to practice that you will need another router.

Not a bad lab, but you could have saved cash buying the routers separate is all I was saying.

It's not a bad lab overall, you should max out memory and flash in the routers.

Does it come with the DB60 cables? They're not listed.

    Unfortunately not.
The CCNP who sold it said he needed it for his IE lab.
    How many will I need?

It's not a bad deal when you consider that he got free shipping. Buying them individually would mean a separate shipping charge for each item, so he did OK.

You'll want at least 3 cables so that you can use your 2520 as a frame relay switch.

Make sure you get DB60-M to DB60-M crossover DTE-DCE cables.

    Good luck with your lab!

    Definitely check out Monoprice: http://www.monoprice.com/products/subdepartment.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10206

Don't feel bad if you paid a little extra. That seems like a solid package and very convenient. I think everyone wastes a little money as they're learning the ropes; I certainly did.

Yep...agreed. You may find better than deals than others, but you have the equipment and you are about to have some fun. It will all pay itself off when you are at work or an interview and need to perform tasks with real equipment!!

Thanks for the link! I need to pick up a couple myself :) . I was eBaying for these at first, but I might just go this route.

This all makes me feel a bit better.
Although I need to get some cables and a bit more ram I did not have to pay for shipping which easily saves me a fair amount of cash.
I'm so excited to set this stuff up. :)

If you can afford it then I'd say get as many sync serial cables (DB60 in your case) as you've got empty sync serial sockets in your lab. You don't want to be doing a lab one night and then run out of cables.

Trawl through eBay and get 3 more AUI transceivers as well.

If you want to connect the 2600 routers to the 2500 routers via sync serial then you'll need to buy some WIC-1T cards. They'll give you a DB60 socket like the 2500 routers.

On a nice to have level, you should look into getting a 2511 or equivalent to use as a terminal server. It is more money to spend but moving your single console cable around to each device is going to get old fast. The 2511 can also do double duty as part of your lab since it has 2 sync serial connectors as well.
