Hello all. 10yrs in IT, 5yrs as a sysadmin at my currently company. Im about to be laid off, and rather than jumping right in to another job, Im debating using the down time to get some education. I have a Gen. Ed. AA and a few certs (A+, Network+, MCSA, MCSE). The Bachelors would serve as some great "resume insurance" for when I get back on the market.

Anyhow Ive been reading all the WGU related posts on this site and I cant believe that this place is legit. It sounds too perfect for my situation. No kids/wife/job so Ill have nothing but time to crank this out. My plan was to go for the CCENT, CCNA, MCTS, and MCITP on my own by the end of the year, then transfer everything over to WGU and complete their BS program as fast as possible.

Has anyone had a chance yet to put the BS from WGU to the test in the job hunt? Whats the general feeling out there for how employers are responding? I really like everything Im reading on this site, but if the BS turns out to be a waste of time Id rather just power through some more certs on my own and save the $$$.

    Thanks

Wow where did the time go? Anyway Im looking at a Feb 1st start date (fingers crossed) and Im wondering how realistic is it to complete the entire program in 6 months? Im shooting for BSIT:Security (13 classes after transferred units), no job/family/life. I appreciate any input.

I can't say myself, but I was just reading this thread and it seems entirely possible if you have the determination.

Just finished my BS in IT at Excelsior (Army TA for 3 years and GI Bill for 1) and hoping to start the MSISA program at WGU March 1st. Only waiting on conferral of my BS (I was told I should make it Feb 17, which will just barely make the deadline for WGU). My Company (GDIT) is footing the bill, allowing me to keep the last 2 years of GI Bill for some other use.

I'm in my third term at WGU, and I have loved every minute of it so far. I got my A+ through them, so it was all paid for. I am getting my Bachelor of Science in Business with an IT Management concentration, so I don't get as many certs as straight up IT degrees, but I like that I am also getting business classes because I think it allows me to be more flexible. I had no prior IT experience going in, and my A.A.S. was in graphic design, so I didn't qualify for any of the other IT degrees.

I had actually planned on starting at WGU this summer, June or July, I'm self-pay so I gotta get the money saved up. My question is should I go for Master's since I already have a BS (non IT), or would it be more practical to finish the BS in IT (probably Security, though not 100% on that) and then go for Master's (either MS or MBA in IT Management.

I can probably finish the BS in one-term, thoughts?
    In Progress:
WGU B.S. - I.T. - Security (and all the certs that come with it)

If you want to go for a Master's in IT, then I see no reason to go for a Bachelor's in IT if you already have one, even if it's non-IT.

Check with one of the enrollment councilors, they would probably have the best answer. If they will let you directly for Masters, as markulous suggested, that's great. If not, you should get most things transferred in. I believe you have to take a minimum of 36CUs to enroll. In other words, after you transfer everything in, you will still need to take at least 36CUs.

I applied since it was free and also spoke to an adviser. I have 2 Associate's degrees and a bunch of certs. When do I send transcripts? When do I get a login? I got this information telling me the steps but not when to do it. What happens if I get a certification once I start the program? Can I get that class waived? Example: If I need to take over 30 credits, I'll obviously want to just study the Security+ on a weekend and get it real quick (have most of the knowledge already from CCNA Sec and everything else) and take the test rather than go through an entire class.

    Business of IT - Applications
Business of IT - Project Management
    Principles of Management
    Data Management - Applications
    Data Management - Foundations
    Critical Thinking and Logic
    Technical Writing
    IT Capstone Written Project

Looks like I would need to take those classes at the very least. Probably OS 1 since I don't have the Linux+ too. I'm hoping that's it though. Would be 33 credits with the OS 1 thrown in there (which is why I asked about being able to take a cert after I started to waive a class).

Depending how long it has been I'd call them back. I had to bug them quite a bit at first to get a login and instructions on my transcript evaluation.

Yes, the cert would waive the class. They pay for you to take the cert exam and that's what gives you credit for that course. You don't have to do anything in the class other than maybe take a practice test to issue the voucher. It's self-study so you don't have to do any assignments or go through certain course material.

Can you elaborate a little more? Do you know what class specifically is for the Linux+, Project+, and Security+ (all three I do not have)? What happens in these classes? I could very easily get the Security+, and I've been told the Project+ isn't bad and I have some of the Linux+ knowledge already. What about the other classes? What are they like? Specifically the Data Management classes. Thanks for your help, I'm feeling really good about doing this if I'm as close as I think.

I've taken Java, HTML, Javascript, Visual Basic, Intro to Computers, Building and ugprading PCs, Server08/12, Into to Networking, Advanced Networking, two electrical engineering courses, and some other entry level PC course. Plus a million gen-ed classes and my certifications. So a great deal should be done considering I've amassed over 110+ college credits.
  • markulousmarkulous Member Posts: 2,394 ■■■■■■■■□□
Linux + is two courses: C220 and C221 which is Operating Systems. Linux+ is different exams.

    Project+ is TPV1 - Project Management

    Security + is CTV1 - Security

Once you get the transcript eval, it'll be much more clearer on what you have to do.
  • hurricane1091hurricane1091 Member Posts: 919 ■■■■□□□□□□
Network and Security - Foundations (Security+???)
    Operating Systems I
    Operating Systems II
    Business of IT - Applications
Business of IT - Project Management
    Principles of Management
    Data Management - Applications
    Data Management - Foundations
    Critical Thinking and Logic
    Technical Writing
    IT Capstone Written Project

That would be 11 classes then. That's not too bad. I forgot that the Linux+ was two exams. So 11 classes potentially isn't bad, I could deal with that.
