I monitor system performance issue on the voice side for Verizon Wireless. I sit in front of a computer and handle voice tickets and also look for alarms. I have to log into cell towers and see if there are any current alarms and if those towers are having incomplete calls or dropped calls. There is a fair amount of unix involved in my job since the Nortel,Motorola and lucent switches all run on these command. I would assume you would be more of a NOC person if your just monitoring alarms. I would take the job either way if i was you. The thing your getting out of this is IT experience. I dont really know your background on the IT side but work experience is always a plus
