Job offer - I need your advice

I got a job offer in Nokia, with a great salary (1.5 my current salary).

but the problem is, I didn't like the job responsibilities much, it's a very relaxed job as they told me.

They told me I should be Administering/Monitoring 3G & 2G Applications that are running on Sun servers. They chose me because of my UNIX background.

I have no idea about those applications, they told me they will give me on the job training.

Those applications are running on two servers only. They also told me those applications are used to monitor (something) and generate some "alarms" ?

so what do you think guys ?? I don't feel it's a very good experience to administer an application, but I really don't know much about it. In my current job, I'm getting priceless experience in Solaris, sun servers, SANS, ..etc. And I'm also getting ALOT of on the job trainings, but the payment is still no good.

Any idea ??

I guess at the moment I'd prolly go with where I'm getting more experience, because that will be worth so much more to you in the future. Money, though nice, isn't really everything.
Isn't it funny how after you have the certifications, you don't care about sharing them as much?

I would inquire as to what the career path is for someone like you in the company. Do they have additional UNIX systems? What if they move away from the application, are you redundant? (and will be let go)

    etc...

That's what I thought too. If the have the experience I can get the money later.

But do you know anybody who's administering 3G & 2G Applications and those Alarms systems ?? I'd like to know what kind of experience they get ?? what if it's good ?

they have a huge installation, but I wont be allowed to handle other servers. My job will be mainly to handle the Applications and alarm system on these application. I've no idea about them, I'd like to know what kind of experience I'm going to get.

I don't think I'm redundant, in a company like Nokia this doesn't happen.

if anybody works for Telco, maybe he can help ?

I would take the job if i was you. I currently took something similar job according to what i got from your post. I monitor system performance issue on the voice side for Verizon Wireless. I sit in front of a computer and handle voice tickets and also look for alarms. I have to log into cell towers and see if there are any current alarms and if those towers are having incomplete calls or dropped calls. There is a fair amount of unix involved in my job since the Nortel,Motorola and lucent switches all run on these command. I would assume you would be more of a NOC person if your just monitoring alarms.

I would take the job either way if i was you. The thing your getting out of this is IT experience. I dont really know your background on the IT side but work experience is always a plus

mmm, thanks that was helpful :)

I don't think NOC experience is good for me right now, because I moved to System Engineering/Design, and soon I'll be moving to clustered systems, so I don't want to move back to NOC and monitoring stuff.
