Jobs where you can work from home? Who has one? Do you like it? Why or why not?

Yes they exist. I work from home sometimes. I like it but it can get distracting so you if you do it I would suggest having an office at home especially if you have kids.

I was going for a job where I would get to work from home all the time consulting a while back but I didn't have a CCIE like some of the other candidates icon_cry.gif

I work from home from time to time, and it is a definite perk. I was expecting a furniture delivery one day, and rather than request time off I was able to work from home and not waste vacation time. If I feel too sick to go to work, but well enough to work from home, I save myself a sick day. Plus the $$$ saved on gas is a definite plus.

I wouldn't like a job where I worked 100% at home though -- I personally need the social interaction and change of scenery.

I work from home quite a bit. There is nothing I cannot do at work that I cannot do from home except escort comms engineers around the data centre.

I usually tend to get a lot more work done from home as well but it takes a lot of discipline as you can easily get distracted. Company don't really mind too much as long as you are there when needed and everything gets done that needs to get done.
    Kam.

My dream job would be to work from home, with a seperate office in my house, and spend about 25% of my time with travel. And I don't mean commuting in rush hour, I mean on a plane to a cool place (or hot place!) :D

We have a couple of departments here that are 100% at home. It seems the Firewall and security people tend to do their job from home, since its all remote anyway.

Yeah, I was just wondering. I hear people say they have them all the time but I can't seem to find any opportunities.

A lot of contract positions that don't require 100% on-site time will have the work-from-home flavor. It happens all the time with contract software engineers, software testers, and tech writers. There are also a lot of help desk and admin grunt-work jobs that are performed at odd hours using remote access tools, but those are mostly off-shore and in countries that pay very low wages.

My experience has been that people transition from being in the office workers to being at home over a period of time. Companies are a bit hesitant to hire someone and then never see them. But many people I know have spent a few years establishing themselves in their role and proving their worth. Once a company views you as a valuable asset, they usually don't care where you get your work done, as long as it gets done.
I don't think too many people start out with a work at home position.
    thanks,
