Now I have "only" 646 and 647 left (doing both because of certain pay raise steps lol).

I checked some prep questions and it seem that 646 is "just" a combination of 642,643 and 640 ... seems easy in a way ...

/me goes back to transcender :P

I wanted to have these done by the end of the year... I don't think I'm going to make it

How has the studying been thus far? Is it pretty easy with a solid 2003 background? I've been so busy that I've barely touched 2008.

If you have a solid Server 2003 background then the AD bit will be a piece of cake ... Its like starting in a new company doing the same job you did before .. You don't really have to learn how to do it, but how "they" do it ... same here ... If you know how Active Directory you know how it the basic works .. but you have to learn how to do it in a server 2008 environment, whats different and how both, 2003 and 2008, work together (if you know what I mean).

As study method I didn't use the official Microsoft books but the Syngress books and a lot of vms

A week before the exam I went through some Transcender and ExamForce test questions but I stopped Transcender for the time being .. I am not patience enough for 160 LOOOOONG questions lol - and I am not native English where I need ages to understand some question so I rather go for the short version

Transcender are still the best choice though .. they are more difficult than the original questions and therefore you NEED TO UNDERSTAND the topic in order to pass the Transcender ones 100% . But Transcender doesn't have study guids for 2008 yet and ExamForce has some nice PDFs coming with it ....
