Takeing a year out

Takeing a year out

I work in IT as a desktop support technician and was thinking of just quitting my job to take a year out work in another country and travel round America. I was thinking would this be a bad idea? Would this harm my carer? I have nothing to lose in some ways as my job is poor paid so I feel like I could get up and walk away but Im worried about what happens after the year if I want to get back into the industry do you think I will have harmed my career and wasted something? I have the A Plus Cert at the moment and Im going to do an MCP in the next few months and then after that Im thinking of walking out to do my road trip and work experience.

Is it a bad idea and will I cut myself out of the industry?

I think its the best idea ever. But then again, I'm one of those kinds of people that would rather travel than buy a big house.

I don't think it would hurt your career. It probably won't help it much, but I think the life experience would be worth 10 times what you would get from working another year in help desk.

It comes down to what your priorities are.

I say go for it..but the more logical side of me says the best way to ensure not getting "cut out" of the industry is to stay on top of technologies even while you're gone..like getting another cert or two while taking a break from actually working in the job. Of course this kind of contradicts the whole "taking a year off" thing, but that's what I would do.

You've already set the wheels in motion for this scenario... now, if you don't go, you'll kick yourself for years to come because you didn't. icon_cool.gif

How many years of experience do you have? What kind of work are you doing in another country?

    10 years to no where!!

10 year experience of a desktop Support Technician with an A Plus and IT Qualification

I will be doing some work in a Kitchen for a bit! Then I will be road tripping in America going to LA California, - San Fransico, up to Seattle and then see some of the national parks and go to Canada! Then after that Im going to Europe to Work in a Youth Hostel In Amsterdam for a bit and do some Eurrope Back Packing

    Then Back Home!!

But nothing to come back to!!

So its like a risk to take! and I would lose my Job! icon_cry.gif
but the job isnt that great and its low paying so wont be that hard to walk away from it!

i did exactly that 2 years ago.... ive been back at work for 14months now...

i had around 8-9 yrs it upto 3rd level support...... took 12months off spent 4months driving and camping around europe that was a blast.. then 6months in hong kong... oz and nz
    best thing I ever did....

got back getting into the job market was not exactly tough... got plenty of offers for 2nd/3rd line as expected... 4months later I ended up in the role I am now back at 3rd line but purely networking and earning 10k more than when i left the year before.....

not quite so sure the job market is as strong as it was a year ago... but i still get called 2-3times a month to see if im interested in other roles.....
either way if you got the chance to travel go for it..... work is always gonna be there......
if I say something that can be taken one of two ways and one of them offends, I usually mean the other one :-)

Well how did taking a year out go for you? Did you put it back in?

    How was Canada and Europe?

I've always wanted to do something similar but its a huge risk. And bills are expensive
