Did not pass Linux+ exam

JockVSJockJockVSJock Member Posts: 1,118
Took the exam on 10/15/2008 and got a 590 where the passing score was a 695, I believe.

It wasn't that I didn't study for the exam, the biggest error was that I was using an older book, Linux+ Exam Cram by Michael Jang, which was from 2001. I was also using a classroom textbook from a class I took back in 2001 too. The reason I picked this book is that I have really enjoyed the Exam Crams books and the ratings were high on Amazon.

I knew I studied the wrong stuff when questions where coming up and I had no idea how to answer them.

So basically I have made and error. I have now ordered the following book, Linux+ Study Guide, 3rd Edition, by by Roderick W. Smith.

My hope is that I have to get thru this book, pass all practice exams and feel confident enough by Dec 31st of of this year because the exam is set to change by 1/1/2009.

Let me know what you all think.

thanks

Sorry to hear about the fail. This one was rough.

They let the old and new exams overlap by something like 4-6 months, so don't panic if you feel like you aren't read come the end of the year.

You should check out the Linux+ In-depth book. I think it's 2005, but it still covers this exam.

This is the one I used. It was a great book, but you'll still need something else to get you ready for the exam. It didn't cover everything perfectly.

I've been using Linux in some form since 2000, so would you still recommend another book to study with?

Also I looked at the study guide on this site and feel that it is really outdated.

    thanks

To be fair, the exam is 4 or 5 years old, so I wouldn't expect a study guide for it to be up-to-date.

It really depends on the extent to which you have used Linux. I use XP on a daily basis, and I had to study my ass off for the 70-270 exam. On the other hand, I haven't used Linux nearly as long as you, and I passed the Linux+. You're probably more experienced than me overall, but you're not fluent with the material that the exam covers. It's really going to be up to you to gauge your readiness. I thought I'd throw out a couple other resources that might be useful to you; I'm not familiar with the book you just got.

The book I am using is "Linux+ Guide to Linux Certification" Second Edition.

The copyright on that book is 2006, so it should be up to date although it comes with fedora core 2 and is pretty much based on that version of Linux. It does have a complete guide to the 2005 Exam though.

    Hope that helps a bit

Hello and Welcome me to the forums also icon_wink.gif

I failed this exam a few months ago I got a 675 and needed 690.....What is that?? Like 1 question?? Grrr Anyways...

I am due to sit the exam in 2 weeks and this time I am far more confident. In fact I kept hearing that the exam isn't that hard and that considering I have been a Linux person since 2001 I figured I breeze through it....not true. Some questions completely threw me and I wonder whether knowing the actual content that they ask is of any real use?!?!

I don't think I have a real question, just wanted to tell people that I failed by getting a 675!! Hurts the hip pocket that!

I am taking the CLP exam in January....that is a completely different exam....Much more useful to know that sort of stuff in my opinion. Anyways....Clogged up the forum enough

    Ciao

I used the same book and found it helpful. I also used a Sybex book, but didn't like it as much. The Linux+ Guide book was very well organized and made it easy for me to study specific topics as I pointed out weak areas.

    Good luck on your re-take.
    Working on....
