Is that a Proliant DL360? I just bought a couple of those on eBay, nearly identical specs. I think I paid $125 (including shipping) for each.

Wow, the price must have really dropped on them DL360's. I have like 5 of DL's at work and we paid like 4k for each of them within the past 4 years or so. Of course the included the OS and licensing (which of course was most of the cost). I also have an older P3 ML350 that's in my cubical that I play around with and try to do labs.

I would say it's a fair price for them specs though. Does it come with the OS or don't you have to worry about that?

Well, I got the G3s (third generation), which are close to the specs he listed. Do you have G4s or G5s?

They didn't come with an OS. I bought them so I could work with ESX, which you get a 60-day trial, and I can move some of my existing VMs over to them, create a few Linux VMs, etc.

Is that one a G3, Nice? You should check what type of memory it takes. Mine takes some really old memory, and I couldn't justify upgrading it (really expensive).

It looks like you can actually get up to 8gb: http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/11430_div/11430_div.html That might be cheaper since you can go with smaller modules. I only have four slots and would need 1gb sticks.

Honestly though, 2GB is more than enough for lab use. I only run my Server 2003 VMs with 256mb. Obviously you'll want more if you're using Exchange or something.

    Both. I got (3) G4 and (2) G5's at work here.

I have gotten the server but there is one problem. There are two hard drives in the server but only one is showing in "my computer" Is there something that I need to change for the server to recognize the second hard drive ?

I think it defaults to RAID-0 or 1, so you'll only see one drive in Windows. Check the RAID settings in the BIOS.

I deleted the mirrored raid and I think it wiped out the operating system as well. I tried installing XP on the server and it tells me Hard disk cannot be found???? do I need to install some software on the server before I install the operating system?

Er...yes. Deleting a Raid array destroys all data (I once had a tech who accidentally did that to a customer with a live server that just needed a redundant drive replaced, fun way to learn that you don't choose 'Initialize' ;) ).

You'll need the Raid driver disk, should be downloadable from the original vendor. Create your array in the Raid/SCSI Bios. Press F6 when prompted for additional SCSI drivers during the XP install and insert the driver floppy.
We responded to the Year 2000 issue with "Y2K" solutions...isn't this the kind of thinking that got us into trouble in the first place?
